Al empezar el beguín me vuelve a1 oído música tierna, noche tropical de memoria eterna del fresco esplendor de un jardín. Bajo las estrellas contigo estoy, allá frente al mar la orquesta tocando, y hasta las palmeras se ven bailando al empezar el beguín. Volverlo a vivir parece imposible, salvo que al oír esa canción nos veo jurando amor inextinguible que nunca tolere separación. Divinos momentos, pura pasión... Luego nubes borraron los placeres vividos... Y hoy cuando oigo gente llorar los chances perdidos comprendo muy bien su intención. ¡No vuelvan a empezar el beguín, que se quede rescoldo el amor, otrora fuego, que duerma como aquel ardor que sólo recuerdo al empezar el beguín! ¡Sí, vuelvan a empezar el beguín, toquen ya! Note. The original edition (1935) of the sheet music of “Begin the beguine” already includes a Spanish version by the noted Mexican-American songwriter Maria Grever, but its lyrics have nothing to do with Cole Porter’s original. A later version (1981) made popular by Julio Iglesias, with his own lyrics, at least contains the line “When they begin the beguine” in English and maintains the subject of longing for a lost love, but it replaces Cole Porter’s lyricism with syrupy clichés, and does not match the original stanza for stanza.

Nota. En la edición original (1935) de la partitura de “Begin the beguine” ya figura una versión española de María Grever, cuya letra sin embargo nada tiene que ver con la de Cole Porter (empieza así: Ritmo anhelante de amor / que sirva de senda a la melodía... ). La versión que popularizó Julio Iglesias (1981), con letra de él mismo, al menos contiene las palabras When they begin the beguine y mantiene el tema de la nostalgia por un amor perdido, pero le sustituye tópicos dulzones a la poesía de Cole Porter y no concuerda estrofa a estrofa con el original.
