Meeting Schedule, Topics, and Readings

  1. Monday 24 February 2003 - Guest Speakers from University of Illinois, Construction Engineering and Management, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

Liu will give an overview of the Construction Program at University of Illinois and present his on-going research on construction field data collection, including mobile & handheld computing, 3D laser scanning for monitoring excavation and construction sequences, and digital close-range photogrammetry applications.

Soibelman will introduce the on-going research of the UIUC-CKDD (Construction Knowledge and Dissemination) group. He will present the research on the development of KDD, text-mining, and image reasoning models and applications for construction management.

El-Rayes will present the on-going research efforts of the IT-FOCUS group (Information Technology-Framework for Optimizing Construction Utilization of Resources). His presentation will focus on optimizing lighting conditions for nighttime construction operations and distributed multi-objective optimization for the construction of large-scale transportation systems.

Pena-Mora will present his work on Collaboration in Large-Scale Infrastructure Projects from three perspectives: Collaboration, Change and Conflicts. This seminar will discuss research efforts on collaboration, change and conflict that have resulted in the development of the Interaction Space theory, the Dynamic Planning Methodology and the Conflict Space framework. This seminar will present research that was conducted to assess the impact of the team interaction space on perceived team performance. Work in change management will also be explained in terms of the general determinants that influence the effectiveness of fast-tracking strategies and the dynamics that affect them. Finally, research efforts will be shown on conflict resolution that has resulted in the development of a framework for conflict mitigation that includes the concepts of conflict space, conflict index and conflict resolution index for a project in order to increase collaboration among the organizations involved.
