Contents

Aims of the Conference

The aim of the conference is to engender Concurrent Engineering thinking and practices within the architecture/engineering/construction industry. The conference is to provide an international forum for researchers and leading experts from various disciplines to exchange ideas and disseminate information on latest developments in Concurrent Engineering. (See definition of Concurrent Engineering)

Conference Themes

The overall conference theme is "Concurrent Engineering in Construction" but this covers many subjects. Topics of interest for presentation and discussion include but are not limited to:

Background

The First International Conference on Concurrent Engineering in Construction - CEC97 - was hosted by the Institution of Structural Engineers and held in London, UK, in 1997.

A group of researchers established CIB Task Group 33 in February 1998 to further pursue the theory and practice of concurrent engineering in construction. TG33 is part of CE-NET, the Concurrent Engineering NETwork of excellence.

The Second International Conference on Concurrent Engineering in Construction - CEC99 - was organized by CIB TG33 and VTT and held in Espoo, Finland on 25-27 August 1999. The conference website still is available at http://cic.vtt.fi/cec99/ and it includes conference abstracts.

Call for Papers and Submissions Schedule

Authors interested in participating in the CEC02 conference should submit papers and will receive feedback according to the following schedule:

Papers should be at most 12 pages long, including figures and references. All submissions (including figures) should be sent electronically to tommelein@ce.berkeley.edu. Specific formatting instructions are presented here in a Adobe Acrobat file and in a Microsoft Word file.

Members of the technical advisory board will assist in reviewing papers and selecting those for inclusion in the proceedings and presentation at the conference.

At least one author of each paper that has been accepted must register for the conference, prior to June 10, or their paper may be declined.

Conference Venue and Meeting Place

The Conference will be held at the University of California in Berkeley, California, USA. The conference is being organized by faculty and staff of the Construction Engineering and Management (CE&M) program. U.C. Berkeley's CE&M Program, housed in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department.

The Conference will take place in the King Student Union. This building is located in the colorful, South end of campus, near the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Bancroft Way. Click here to see a large campus map or to get driving directions. Consider taking public transportation. It is very convenient to take BART to campus. Get off at Berkeley station, then walk due east (uphill). Allow about 10 minutes to get to the Student Union. Also see the Transportation section further down in this document for additional information.

Our conference will start at 8 AM on Monday and at the same time on Tuesday. Please check in at the welcome desk in front of the meeting room to pick up your badge and a hard copy of the proceedings between 7:30 and 8 AM. A light breakfast will be provided.

Registration

Please submit your registration form and payment PRIOR to June 10 (at least one author for each paper) and PRIOR to June 16, 2002 otherwise. Registrations received after June 16 will be charged $50 extra. (This form is in .pdf format so you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it. To download the reader for free, click here: , then download the registration form.)

The fees are as follows:

  • Upon cancellation with notification received before June 21, all paid fees minus $125 will be reimbursed.
  • Sorry we cannot provide any reimbursement after this date.

See the section below for information on transportation and on accommodations. You need to make your own reservation.

  • Copyright

    Transportation

U.C. Berkeley is located on the east side of the San Francisco Bay area. The University can be reached by subway, using the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. The nearest stop is Berkeley Station. AC Transit also provides bus service in and around Berkeley (see map). A University shuttle bus travels clockwise around the campus.

The airport closest to Berkeley is Oakland (OAK); the second nearest one is San Francisco (SFO). San Jose Airport (SJC), at the south end of the Bay, is quite far and you probably will need to rent a car to conveniently get to Berkeley. Public transportation to/from any of these airports is available. Public transportation from Oakland Airport to Berkeley includes BART (take the AirBART bus at the airport, then transfer to a BART train at the Coliseum/Oakland Airport stop). In addition, several door-to-door limo services (shared rides, such as the BayPorter) provide airport transportation.

Should you consider renting a car: think twice! Parking in Berkeley expensive and difficult. The same is true in San Francisco. The police issues numerous citations; Berkeley police tickets currently are $28 for simple parking violations!

    Accommodations

On-campus rooms may be reserved in Stern Hall, a U.C. Berkeley dormitory. The rates are $53 for single occupancy and $34/person for double occupancy (i.e., $68 for the room). Please make your reservation early! Reservations can be made on line through Summer Visitor Housing, or by calling call Conference Services through May 31 at (510) 642-4444 and by calling Summer Visitor Housing on or after June 1 at (510) 642-5925. Reservations made less than one week prior to your arrival should be confirmed by calling (510) 642-5925. This website also posts directions to Stern Hall. Should you need overnight parking, please ask them about the parking fees.

Rooms are also available at the Durant Hotel. This hotel is located to the south side of campus on 2600 Durant and is within walking distance from the conference site. Guests must make their own reservations as soon as possible by calling 1-800-2DURANT or 510-845-8981, or by sending a fax 510-486-8336 or e-mail: durant@sfo.com. Ask for the "University" room rate (tell them you will participate in CEC02), which is around $120 (depending on room size) plus a 12% occupancy tax. Overnight parking for hotel guests costs $10 per vehicle and per night.

In addition, Berkeley, other East Bay cities, and of course San Francisco provide numerous hotel accommodations. Should you stay in the City, it is easy to take BART to get to the Berkeley campus. See Transportation for more details.

Note that July is the National Holiday in the US so if you are in for fireworks, BBQs, and other events as well as patriotic displays, this is the time to be here.
